Newark-on-Trent is a historic market town in Nottinghamshire, set on the banks of the River Trent. With an impressive castle, fascinating museums, attractive streets and plenty of independent shops and cafés, Newark offers lots to see and do for visitors of all ages.

One of the town's most recognisable landmarks is **Newark Castle**, which stands beside the River Trent. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle has played an important role in English history and was where King John died in 1216. Although much of the building is now ruined, its imposing walls and riverside setting remain an impressive sight. The surrounding gardens are also a pleasant place for a stroll.

History enthusiasts should visit the **National Civil War Centre**, which explores Newark's important role during the British Civil Wars. The town endured three sieges, and the museum uses historic objects, displays and interactive exhibits to tell the stories of the people who lived through this turbulent period.

At the heart of Newark is its attractive **Market Place**, surrounded by historic buildings and overlooked by the Georgian Town Hall. Regular markets offer everything from traditional stalls to antiques and collectables. Nearby, the impressive **Church of St Mary Magdalene** is another landmark worth seeing.
